This slideshow requires JavaScript. Suicide Squad is a 2016 American superhero film based on the DC Comics anti-hero team of the same name, produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, Ratpac-Dune Entertainment and Tencent Pictures in China. It is intended to be the third installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is written and directed by David Ayer and stars an ensemble cast featuring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje Clifton Collins Jr. in his feature film debut, Cara Delevingne, Karen Fukuhara, Scott Eastwood and Ike Barinholtz. By February 2009, a Suicide Squad film was in development at Warner Bros. The plot would have revolved around the team-up of various DC Comics villains. Ayer signed on to write and direct in September 2014, and by October the casting process had begun. Principal photography began on April 13, 2015 in Toronto, Ontario with additional filming in Chicago, Illinois, and ended in August that year. Suicide Squad premiered in New York City on August 1, 2016, and was released in the United States on August 5, 2016, in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D. Following a strong debut that set new records, the film has grossed over $745 million worldwide, making it the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2016. The film received generally unfavourable reviews from critics for its screenplay, characters and tone which veered "between grimly competent and sometimes verging on campy", although the cast was received favourably. The film received three nominations at the 23rd Visual Effects Society Awards, including Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature Motion Picture. It won one award at the 7th Empire Awards, Best Villain. A sequel is currently in development. During his night patrol, Captain Rick Flag Jr. meets with his superior officer Colonel Patrick Ainsworth over the radio to report on how the squad has lost the trust of their superiors after several recent failures and how they need to be reevaluated. The squad's equipment includes a new drone-like flying vehicle which allows them to travel faster than humanly possible for short distances, allowing them to evade authorities or capture people in vehicles if it is important for their mission. The Squad also uses a custom Harley-Davidson motorbike with a slightly more powerful engine and display screens on the handlebars. After a mission to retrieve a bug, Flag is ordered to shoot all his team members except Deadshot. Deadshot wakes up after being shot and escapes.
